Did You Know Your Sessions Could Be Tax-Deductible?

With tax season just around the corner, it’s a good time to review which medical expenses you may be able to claim.

If you have been attending services with us, you may be able to include some of those costs when preparing your income tax return, depending on your individual situation.

Therapy and Mental Health Services

Fees paid to registered health professionals such as psychologists, occupational therapists, social workers, and registered counselling therapists may be considered eligible medical expenses by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), depending on the provider’s credentials, the nature of the service, and CRA rules. Eligibility can vary by profession and province, so if you are unsure whether a specific service qualifies, it’s a good idea to confirm with your accountant or tax professional.

If you have extended health insurance, you can usually claim only the portion you paid out of pocket, meaning the amount not reimbursed by your insurance plan. Be sure to keep your receipts and insurance statements for your records.

Keeping Track of Your Expenses

To make claiming easier, keep:

  • Receipts with the provider’s name, credentials, and the amount you paid

  • Records of any insurance reimbursements

You can usually combine medical expenses over a 12-month period that ends in the tax year to maximize your claim.
